Interlibrary Loan: Basic Policies

Need something we don't have at the Sherrod Library? We can get it for you (or try our best)! Learn more.

Who may use ILL?

Interlibrary Loan may be used by currently enrolled students, and active faculty/staff members, and faculty emeritus with valid ID.

Not one of those groups?

  • If you are an alumni or previous employee, you will need to request ILL materials through your public library.
  • If you are a student between semesters, are not registered for classes, but need ILL service, please talk to your advisor about the Readings and Research course.

As of June 2014, temporary employees now have ARTICLE privileges through Interlibrary Loan.

If a book is a textbook or required reading for any class, the Sherrod Library ILL department will not order it.  This policy has been in place for over twenty years.

Semesters at ETSU last 16 weeks; the standard ILL loan period is 3 weeks, with a possible 2-week renewal.  Patrons in the past have kept the property of other libraries for the full 16 weeks, jeopardizing our ability to borrow material for all other students and faculty... so now we do not borrow textbooks.

We know textbooks are expensive.  Encourage your professor to put a copy on reserve here at the Sherrod Library.  We'll make it available to every student in the class, two hours per check-out, and the book does not leave the library.
