Assistive Technology

Sherrod Library is committed to providing all patrons with an inclusive, welcoming and safe environment. The library strives to provide equitable access to library collections, resources and services, regardless of physical or cognitive ability.

Special Services Lab

Equipment and software designed to help persons with disabilities use library collections, resources and services is available in the Special Services Lab, located on the third floor, in Room 318.

Entry to the Special Services Lab is controlled by an ETSU ID card reader. Contact Disability Services to request access.

Assistive software is installed on all computers located in the Special Services Lab.

ZoomText is a screen magnification program that enlarges and enhances everything on the computer screen, making it easier for persons with visual impairments to see and use the computer.

Job Access with Speech (JAWS) is a screen reader program that enables blind or visually impaired persons to read text displayed on the computer screen using a text-to-speech audio output or braille display.

Low vision keyboards are available on select computers located in the Special Services Lab and feature large print letters, high contrast colors and keys 30% larger than those on a standard keyboard.

MagniSight Video Magnifier magnifies books, documents, photographs and other objects by projection onto a monitor. Simple controls enlarge and enhance the projected image, making it easier for persons with visual impairments to see and use the object being projected.

Videophone

A Sorenson videophone, located on the third floor, in Room 330, enables phone communication between Deaf and hearing persons, facilitated by an on-screen sign language interpreter. A SVRS phone number is required in order to place and receive calls.

Entry to Room 330 is controlled by an ETSU ID card reader. Contact Disability Services to request access.

KIC Scanner

Knowledge Imaging Center (KIC) book and document scanner is located on the first floor on the third floor, in Government Information, Law and Maps, Room 305. KIC scanners are equipped with the following accessibility features: 22 inch touchscreen interface with large buttons and simple controls, document output in searchable PDF format and text-to-speech audio output in MP3 format.
