Message from the Search Chair

Hello, 

Thank you for your interest in our Arts & Humanities Librarian position in the Research & Instructional Services (RIS) Dept. at the Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University. We are looking for someone who can fill out our RIS team with their knowledge of the Arts & Humanities disciplines. We’d like to give you as much information as we can to help you during the application process.

Sherrod is a mid-sized academic library serving just under 15,000 students and about 2,400 faculty and staff members, including distance learners and remote sites. As a state institution, we also serve members of the general public. Our RIS faculty may consult with users in person, by phone, by chat, or using video conferencing software such as Zoom.

RIS faculty members also serve as liaisons to academic departments. This involves establishing and maintaining contact with faculty in assigned departments, assisting with collection development, and providing library instruction.

Faculty members are also involved in planning for Sherrod Library, and may serve on University and/or Library committees.

Arts & Humanities Librarian

Rank: Assistant Professor, Non-tenured

Salary: $48,000, starting 

As a member of the library faculty, this position partners with university faculty in the arts and humanities disciplines to promote information and visual/data literacy through instruction, creation of resources (tutorials, LibGuides, etc.), and research support. This 12-month, continuing (non-tenured) faculty appointment reports to the Director of Research & Instruction Services (RIS), and contributes to a team environment. As a part of the RIS team, this position also provides general research assistance and work to enhance user experience and engagement. Work hours are generally 8:00-4:30 Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend hours may be required. Work schedule may be adjusted with the approval of the Director of Research and Instruction.

Duties and Responsibiltiies

  • Knowledge of the library’s databases, search interfaces, and other resources to effectively meet users’ information needs.
  • Knowledge of the philosophy and practice of librarianship
  • Creativity to develop, implement, and manage library programs and services
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal/oral and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with colleagues, faculty, students, staff, and university stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited program or a terminal degree in a comparable field from an accredited institution by time of appointment.
  • Ability to work closely and effectively with students, faculty, and staff with diverse backgrounds and experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience searching relevant databases
  • Experience providing in-person or online reference service and instruction
  • Knowledge of current web, instructional, and productivity technologies (e.g. LibGuides, Zoom, WebEx, GoToMeeting, D2L, Microsoft Office)
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace or community

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated skills in interdisciplinary services such as digital media production, digital scholarship, or data services.
  • Demonstrated skill with tutorial creation
  • Applicable subject knowledge (degree, coursework, work/volunteer experience)

Description of Job Duties

  • Develops and delivers course-integrated information literacy and library instruction to support research and practices for ETSU programs (may be in-person, online, and/or embedded).
  • Stays current with discipline-specific trends, curricular structure, pedagogical methods, and innovative instructional delivery.
  • Partners with faculty and staff in their liaison areas to identify library support needs and assess the effectiveness of information literacy and library research instruction for the undergraduate students in these areas. Works collaboratively to integrate library into curriculum, research, and programs.
  • Initiates outreach and marketing efforts, including presenting to academic and service departments, assessing user needs, and developing new library instruction, workshops, or programs to meet the needs of the ETSU programs and academic community, in concert with the RIS team.
  • Develops and maintains specialized knowledge of the library’s databases, search interfaces, and other resources to effectively meet users’ information needs.
  • Provides expert reference and research consultation services, including chat reference, in-depth research consultation, mediated database searching, identifying appropriate information resources, search strategy development and recommendations for citation management tools and strategies.
  • Collaborates with other library faculty and staff to design and deliver library instruction, develop and maintain learning materials and implement assessment of library instruction outcomes and teaching effectiveness.
  • Develops and maintains online guides, online tutorials, and other library resources.
  • Contributes to program planning and reporting in the unit and library.
  • Participates in service activities and professional development activities relevant to role and responsibilities.
