East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is seeking an Innovative Technologies and STEM Librarian to join a team dedicated to developing and delivering instructional programs that foster digital literacy and a maker mindset, while advancing teaching, learning, and research across STEM disciplines. This role involves collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to identify, evaluate, and integrate new technologies that enhance these activities. As the library liaison for faculty in any discipline using augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), 3D scanning and printing, data visualization, or interdisciplinary applications of these technologies, the librarian will also serve as a liaison to various academic departments within the STEM fields, including Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
 

This position is an Assistant Professor, 12-month track with a renewable 3-year appointment. The position reports to the Director of Innovative Technologies and Discovery Services. The work schedule is flexible, with occasional evening and weekend hours required. As a key member of the Charles C. Sherrod Library faculty, the Innovative Technologies and STEM Librarian will support emerging technologies for library faculty and staff. Additionally, as a faculty member, they are expected to pursue professional development and meet the requirements for a clinical track position, including academic responsibilities, research, and service.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and experience with information and data sources in STEM disciplines.
  • Knowledge of digital media and production equipment, including audio (e.g., software for sound recording, microphones); video editing (software for video editing, cameras); AR/VR software (Transfr VR, Organon, or equivalent); and/or 3D modeling (software for modeling, scanning devices).
  • Knowledge of makerspace equipment and related software, including 3D printing, laser engraving, vinyl cutting, and/or sewing.
  • Knowledge of safety best practices for makerspaces.
  • Knowledge of rapid-prototyping, maker and crafting practices.
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools and applications.
  • Ability to problem-solve and troubleshoot technology issues.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new tools, techniques, and systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited program, or equivalent degree if earned outside the U.S. or Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited program in a STEM discipline.
  • Experience with virtual reality hardware and software.
  • Experience with 3D scanners, printers, or design software.
  • Experience providing technology support and instruction in an academic library, research, or educational setting.
  • Experience working with faculty in a university setting.
  • Experience creating learning materials.
