Faculty instructions for course reserve

Access to Course Reserves for Spring semester

Due to the health and safety measures that will be in place during the Spring 2021 semester, physical course reserves will not be available.  When possible an electronic alternative has been purchased for items currently held on course reserve.

Course Reserves for Students

What are course reserves?

Course reserves are items that are:

  • provided by your instructor
  • listed in your course syllabus under Bibliography, Recommended Readings, and/or Supplemental Materials
  • digital files or links available in your online course site
  • physical items available to borrow in the Sherrod Library at the Ask Us desk on the first floor

Typical course reserves may include books, articles, notes, practice exams, and DVDs.

How do I find course reserves in the library?

Go to OneSearch and start typing the course code (HIST in this example) in the search box. A drop-down list of collections to search will appear.

Click on Course Reserves. Results display in Relevance order and include all items that match your search.

Refine your results by Course Name, Course ID, or Course Instructor: scroll down to the bottom of the "Tweak my results" column and click the option you want.

Click on an item in the results list to see if it is available ("Item in place"). Status changes when an item is checked out.

Use Online Course Reserve

Use Course Reserves in Sherrod Library

  • Borrow course reserve items at the Ask Us desk on the first floor.
  • Present your ETSU ID to the staff and tell them you want to borrow course reserves.
  • Provide the name of the instructor or the course code and number (e.g., HIST 2010) and the call number or title of the item(s). Staff can help you locate items if you have course or instructor information.

Demand is high and most loan periods are short. You may be able to borrow an item again immediately if no one is waiting for it.

Return course reserve items to the Ask Us desk before their loan period ends. If the library is closed, you can put them in the book return. They won't be counted as returned until the library checks them in.

Lost Items

If you fail to return a reserve item, you will be billed for its replacement ($45-$100 depending on the item).
