Research Methods in Geography

Geographic research encompasses a very broad range of topics including people, places and environments. One of the unique tools used in research in Geography is Geographic Information Systems (GIS), a tool for analyzing quantitative spatial data. Human geography is concerned with the location and demographics of people, how they change over time and across cultures and nations. Local knowledge is an important consideration to qualitative geography, so researchers may wish to do fieldwork and use ethnographic methods to generate data and theories. For an introduction into doing quantitative research in geography, try Quantitative Geography, by A. Stewart Fotheringham, Chris Brunsdon, Martin Charlton.
