Research into crime and criminal justice is often a matter of carefully negotiating access to prisons, courtrooms and police stations, and as it regularly deals with sensitive topics and vulnerable people, a strong focus must be given to the ethics of the research. As well as small scale research, such as life history research or ethnographies, researchers might evaluate the impact of policy on levels of crime, or the perception of crime by society and the media. In an international context, comparative analysis might be done to compare justice or crime across nations.
