What is Laser Engraving?

A laser engraver is a computer-controlled machine, where the computer controls movement of a laser over the material surface. Our XTool F1 can cut and engrave materials, including wood, acrylic, leather, rock, rubber, card stock, glass, and cork. The infrared laser allows for additional metals and plastics such as stainless steel, gold, silver, and plastic.

How can I use the Laser Engraver in the Makerspace?

  • No previous experience is required. Innovation Commons staff will assist in the operation of the machine.
  • Unsupervised use of Laser Engraver requires orientation and certification.
  • Advance reservation is encouraged. Walk-ins are accepted pending staff and equipment availability.
  • You are welcome to bring your own materials but must be approved by Innovation Commons staff. These items must be safe to engrave on and do not release toxic fumes.
